Assistant Professor, Dairy/Livestock Genomics

Animal Science Department

College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences

Dr. Abo-Ismail research interests focus on both theoretical and applied genetics and genomics in livestock. He used genomic information to enhance genetic evaluation of livestock species with emphasis on genomic selection. He has experience in applied livestock research using Animal Genetics and Genomics as well as applied bioinformatics to address livestock industry-wide challenges. Dr. Abo-Ismail developed DNA testing panels to improve health, feed efficiency, carcass and meat quality, and fertility as well as behaviour and activity traits in dairy and beef cattle. He also developed genomic tools to optimize the benefits of heterosis or hybrid vigour in beef cattle breeding program. In addition, Dr. Abo-Ismail identified biomarkers and developed genomic tools to delineate disease processes including Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), high immune response (HIR) and Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis.
