Maija was born and raised in Ojai, California. She has been involved with horses for over thirty-five years. Her passion is three-day eventing, but she has also shown in countless dressage and hunter/jumper  shows as well as received instruction from George Morris, Torrence Fleishman, Don Sachey, Brian Sabo, Janis Keiler and others. She graduated with her A rating from the United States Pony Club at eighteen years old, taught numerous camps all over the United States, judged schooling shows and has started many horses under saddle. She has lived in San Luis Obispo County for the past twenty-four years. Maija holds a California teaching credential and a Masters in Curriculum and Instruction from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

She taught at local school districts for ten years and continued to ride, train and give lessons on the side. For the past eight and a half years she and her husband owned and operated Buckley Stables in

San Luis Obispo. There she boarded and cared for an average of sixty-five horses and clients on their sixty-acre facility.  She is thrilled to combine her knowledge of equestrian science with education.
