Embryo recoveryEmbryo Recovery Rates Using Fresh and Frozen-thawed Quarter Horse Semen

Researcher: Jaymie Noland, DVM

Purpose: To provide data comparing frozen-thawed semen to standard fresh semen as it relates to embryo recovery rates; in order to assist the industry in the proper application and use of frozen semen in Quarter Horse embryo transfer programs.

Background: Within the Quarter Horse breed, little information is known regarding the effects of semen cryopreservation on embryo recovery rates. Through the approval of frozen semen use, the American Quarter Horse Association provided the opportunity for faster genetic improvement and subsequent financial rewards for the Quarter Horse breeders in California, a substantial portion of the $1.4 billion equine industry in the state.
