Animal
science offers students the opportunity to
apply the principles of animal biology, molecular biology, and other
life sciences to a variety of species. Students can apply these
principles to farm animals, exotic animals, laboratory animals,
and to their own pets. The curriculum is very flexible, which allows
students to work with their faculty adviser to plan an individual
curriculum in line with their interests and career goals. Cal Poly's
Animal Science Department boasts one of the most comprehensive "hands-on,
learn by doing" programs in the United
States, as students work with
animals of several species on a regular basis. Extensive facilities
provide the resources for students to learn the principles required
for success in such areas as managing commercial and companion animal
production facilities, zoo and exotic animal care units, embryo
transfer and animal biotechnology, animal food manufacturing, etc.
The flexibility of our curriculum provides the basis
for students to learn, understand, and apply the principles of
science
and technology to unlimited career opportunities in hundreds of
different fields. In this technology-driven world, the
animal science
curriculum best prepares students to .successfully respond to and
integrate the rapid changes in science and technology with societal,
economic, and cultural changes that are occurring. The major provides
excellent preparation for students who will take a position in
animal-related
industries upon graduation, as well as those (approximately 45
percent)
entering veterinary medicine or graduate schools to obtain advanced
degrees.
